Position Description

The Senior Electrical Engineer plays a key role in the design and development of distribution transformers in accordance with IEEE, CSA, DOE, and customer specifications. This role requires a deep understanding of transformer electrical design principles, materials, and applicable industry standards. The ideal candidate will provide advanced technical support, collaborate across departments, and lead initiatives to improve product design, production, and testing to ensure performance, cost, and reliability objectives are met.

Requirements

Key Responsibilities

Design & Development

• Design, develop, and review electrical specifications for distribution transformers, ensuring compliance with IEEE, CSA, DOE, and customer requirements.

• Develop and review electrical designs including core type and sizing, coil designs, switch and tap-selector components, and connections for custom and non-standard configurations.

• Perform advanced electrical calculations, including impedance, losses, efficiency, insulation coordination, fuse coordination, and short-circuit strength.

• Utilize engineering software (AutoCAD, ANSYS, MATLAB, or proprietary transformer design tools) for electrical modeling and simulation.

• Participate in design reviews and analyses related to product performance, manufacturability, and design optimization.

• Support and participate in new product development and product-improvement initiatives to maintain market competitiveness.

Standards and Compliance

• Ensure designs comply with relevant industry regulations, utility requirements, and customer specifications.

• Stay up to date with evolving industry standards and represent the company in industrial committees and technical events as required.

• Support all electrical certification and testing requirements, including dielectric testing, loss and efficiency validation, and short-circuit performance assessments.

Collaboration and Coordination

• Work closely with design engineers and cross-functional teams to validate design requirements and ensure alignment with product goals.

• Participate in process-improvement initiatives to enhance departmental efficiency and output quality.

• Provide technical support to manufacturing and assembly teams, including winding specifications, component/material selection, and hook-up requirements.

• Support customers by responding to technical inquiries and providing guidance on transformer application and performance.

• Provide technical support during prototype builds, production, and customer testing activities.

• Participate in pre-order and post-order design reviews to ensure technical compliance and mitigate risks.

Qualifications

Education

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in Electrical Engineering or a related field.

Experience

• 15+ years of engineering experience in a transformer manufacturing environment.

Skills and Competencies

• Proficiency with engineering design and analysis tools (CAD, FEA, simulation software) as well as productivity and ERP systems.

• Extensive knowledge of distribution transformer design, manufacturing processes, and applicable industry standards (ANSI, IEEE, IEC, CSA).

• Understanding of mechanical fabrication methods and related systems.

• Strong project-management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.

• Ability to lead diverse teams and foster collaboration across departments and engineering disciplines.
