3RD PARTY LOGISTICS (3PL)
Category Leaders must have recent relevant experience in the Category (ideally, this experience is with companies similar in size and complexity to Company Category Leaders must have experience in executing Category Managegment/Strategic Sourcing.
JOB DUTIES: Category leaders will be responsible for establishing and leading an enterprise-wide cross-functional team which will implement four major processes: Category Planning; Strategic Sourcing; Contract Management and Supplier Relationship Management (further details below).
Process 1: Category Planning:
Develop the Category Profile
The Category leader will work with a Cross Functional Team (CFT) in order to provide a comprehensive view of internal spend, supplier analysis and capabilities, and market factors in order to derive key opportunities for developing category strategies and increasing overall category value.
The Category Leader will work with the CFT to perform the following:
Develop internal spend analysis and gather requirements
Mature spend data for category
Identify and define sub categories that comprise total organizational spend
Based on initial opportunity assessment, mature spend analysis for each identified sub-category
Develop/refine demand profile for the category, sub-category, region, site, and/or program
Prioritize key requirements in alignment with category opportunities
Conduct supplier and market analysis
Define supply market & evaluate current supplier relationships
Complete supplier capability assessment
Identify possible new suppliers for the category, sub-category, region, site, and/or program
Identify contractual ability to source elements of category spend
Develop understanding of market by evaluating strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT)
Evaluate relative buyer/ supplier strengths
Conduct TCO, Best Practice, Benchmark, and Performance Gap Analysis
Develop total cost of ownership model (TCO)
Identify key metrics which impact category and establish baselines
Gather and compare best practices
Benchmark performance against external sources (as applicable)
Highlight performance gaps
Identify targets and possible initiatives that will close gaps
Develop roadmap for closing gaps
Develop Category Strategy and Category Plan
The Category Leader will work with the Cross Functional Team in order to provide a clearly defined and approved approach for directing category initiatives and procurement decisions.
This includes:
Develop business case for change
Define objectives, risk profile, and saving goals for the category
Select and plan overall category strategy
Define specific tactics for achieving or implementing the category strategy (tactics may include pursuing strategic sourcing events/projects, demand management initiative, and/or spend compliance opportunities)
List all of the strategic sourcing, demand management, spend compliance, or other major category initiatives that are recommended within the defined category
The plan should include type of initiative, objectives/goals, schedule, and resource requirements
Present Category Strategy and Plan to Category Council for approval
Category planning deliverables will be documented using standard Company SCCM templates and will be reviewed and approved by the appropriate Category Council

Process 2: Strategic Sourcing:
The Category Leader will work with the Cross Functional Team and appropriate Procurement Operations Procurement agents and management to enable strategic Sourcing.
This includes:
Determine Strategic versus tactical procurement events
Coordinate Sourcing
Coordinate Sourcing plan
Note that in general the actual request for proposal and negotiating the contract will be executed by procurement operations, not the Category leader.
Strategic Sourcing deliverables will be documented using standard Company SCCM templates and will be reviewed and approved by the appropriate Category Council. These include:
Annual Sourcing Plan that identifies all Strategy sourcing events within the category for the defined period and a project plate for each event.
Category Sourcing event guidance including sourcing event guidance; negotiation Strategy/Plan for the negotiation teams; defining the data to be gathered prior to negotiation
Individual Sourcing event strategy including a sourcing profile, sourcing strategy and negotiation plan
Process 3: Contract Management:
The Category Leader will work with the Cross Functional Team and appropriate Procurement Operations Procurement agents and management to deploy contract management. This includes developing contract guidelines and defining contract objectives.
Process 4: Supplier Relationship Management (SRM)
The Category Leader will work with the Cross Functional Team and appropriate Procurement Operations Procurement agents and management to deploy category-wide supplier relationship management. This includes coordinating supplier engagement and coordinating supplier development and collaboration.
Supplier relationship management deliverables will be documented using standard Company SCCM templates and will be reviewed and approved by the appropriate Category Council. These include:
Category SRM guidance
Supplier Stratification
Unique category SRM requirements
Collaboration approach (working together)
Supplier development and collaboration project plan
Training:
Category leaders will have the opportunity to participate in a four day Company unique Strategic Contracting and Category Management training program to better understand Company unique documentation and deliverables.
JOB SKILLS:
Leadership and project management skills
Able to develop the vision, objectives, charter and portfolio project plan for category and cross-functional category teams
Able to facilitate development of the framework and foundation for category management in the appropriate area, develop the category sourcing strategy and create the enterprise category plan
Able to facilitate agreement on the plan with business partners and other stakeholders, monitor progress against the plan in a cross-functional category team, and identify and implement corrective action to make sure progress is achieved against the plan
Analytical capabilities
Skilled to review and develop actionable findings from analysis and reports from business and market intelligence as well as spend data
Able to manage spend information in order to identify opportunities for each category
Able to define or apply the category segmentation structure and taxonomy or each category and value / prioritize all of the potential opportunities
Able to engage in regional collaboration and vet recommendations for the category segmentation structure to influence and achieve a common understanding across stakeholder groups
Strategic planning experience
Able to influence and rally the team and business partners around the standard processes to source an individual category
Able to ensure the plan is in line with a broader portfolio plan, the category sourcing strategy and the prioritized opportunities
Category management expertise
Able to manage the category plan on a weekly basis and assist procurement operations in executing management of the plan on a daily basis. Have appropriate levels of deep category expertise.
Results orientation and continuous improvement skills
Within the governance structure, able to review the category implementation status, assist to develop accurate reports of results and drive continuous improvement using SRM processes
Communication and Presentation Skills
Able to communicate effectively with all levels and in multiple mediums
Able to manage conflict and lead through influence
6+ months — possible extension and possible FTE opportunity.
