Position Description:

**US Citizenship required**

The C-17 military cargo aircraft design team is looking for a Mid-level or Senior Mass Properties engineer to join their team in Long Beach, CA supporting the C-17 Sustainment Program.

This individual will be the lead Mass Properties engineer responsible for monitoring the aircraft's mass properties throughout its lifecycle. Performing mass properties analyses, weight control, and reporting for major aircraft modifications using mass properties database and reporting system, computer aided design (CAD) tools and Microsoft Excel. Will coordinate with engineering SME’s across the program to understand weight impacts on flight performance and to support design decisions. This individual will determine weight and CG impacts of design changes and modifications and will maintain that data in the mass properties database. Will disposition supplier Actual Weight reports and supplier deviation waivers. Provide source data and review of Technical Order and TCTO revisions for changes affecting aircraft weight and/or CG. Support trade studies with weight and CG data. When required, will support aircraft recoveries with weight and CG impacts and support airworthiness reviews.

Position Responsibilities:
Develops complex weight, balance and mass properties data
Determines approaches to developing data and analyzes and compares results
Defines complex weight, balance and mass properties related design requirements
Participates in developing customer specification commitments
Provides complex vehicle or system configuration guidance
Leads individual design team weight control efforts
Estimates, calculates and measures and verifies mass, weight, stiffness and inertias of components, assemblies and completed vehicles or systems
Develops and maintains weight, balance and mass properties accounting systems and generates weight and balance reports
Uses excellent oral and written communication skills to communicate with the design teams, other mass properties engineers, program management at all levels, and the customer
Provide training and mentoring to less experienced engineers
Produce center of gravity envelopes to ensure Loadability and airworthiness requirements are met
Calculate and estimate component weights, moment arms, and mass moment of inertia from engineering drawings and CAD models
Develop aircraft mass distributions in support of external loads development
Develop analysis methods and tools for mass properties estimation
Requirements:


REQUIRED SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS:
1. 5+ years of experience with weights and/or mass properties engineering for aircraft
2. Experience using a mass properties database in order to track weight and center of gravity information
3. Experience with SAWE Recommended Practice 7 & 8 or Mil-std-1374 mass properties weight control standards
4. Experience with Automated Weight and Balance System (AWBS)
5. Familiarity with military weight and balance handbooks for aircraft delivery
6. Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited course of study in engineering, engineering technology (includes manufacturing engineering technology), chemistry, physics, mathematics, data science, or computer science

Preferred Skills/Qualifications:
1. Experience with SAWE Recommended Practice 7 & 8 or Mil-std-1374 mass properties weight control standards
2. Understanding of military weight and balance reporting requirements and methods
3. Experience on a military platform
4. Advanced skill in managing large data sets in Microsoft Excel
5. Aircraft Weight and Balance Certification
6. Experience with Automated Weight and Balance System (AWBS)
7. Familiarity with military weight and balance handbooks for aircraft delivery
8. Experience with aircraft weighing equipment, general weighing procedures, and calibration requirements.
9. Experience using NX and IPDM
10. Experience with jacking and stabilizing aircraft
11. Experience with tip back analysis and ballast requirements for towing aircraft

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 9 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD+4 years' related work experience, Master+7 years' related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.
