Will be expected to provide broad-based Materials and Processes (M&P) Engineering support and guidance for composites, interior composites, and metal bond parts, assembly and installation processing as a member of and in support of integrated product teams (IPT's) responsible for the design, manufacturing, and after delivery product support of maintenance, modifications, and upgrades applied to various airframes. Additional detail as follows: Will lead and coordinate efforts with multiple, internal and external customers to define and document performance and producibility options that meet the program goals and objectives. Writes complex plans or oversees the authoring of plans (Contamination Control, Corrosion Control, Flammability Certification, Parts Materials and Processes) to provide design guidance and ensure contractual compliance. Prepares written reports, operating procedures, specifications, and data analysis. Prepares and compiles test reports to make recommendations. Generates or directs qualification and certification documentation for large projects. Reviews documentation generated by peer and other engineers. Presents results at the division level and to customers. Resides as focal to outside organizations to address design, production, and safety issues using experience and sound technical judgment. Uses extensive knowledge of materials and processes, regulatory issues (such as safety, environmental, flammability, export control) and contractual requirements to avoid conflicts between certification, contractual, and FAA requirements. Provides guidance on producibility issues, FAA regulations and policies, material and process selection, material compatibility, and substitutions to ensure compatibility of the design with the manufacturing process and end use environment. In complex situations, assesses parts, process and material failures using
appropriate tools (root cause analysis, fishbone), instrumentation, tests, and data analysis to determine failure root cause and recommend corrective action. Provides leadership and technical expertise to production (both internal and supplier built) to facilitate the first manufacturing part and materials to ensure they meet requirements. Consults and provides on-going support (optimization, trouble shooting, non-conformation disposition, lean or improvement activities, process hazard safety analysis and hazard mitigation) and contributes to resolution of complex issues. Leads the qualification of materials systems to ensure conformance to requirements including test witnessing. Provides input to team identifying conflicts between requirements and capabilities. Validates manufacturing process by planning and directing the fabrication of complex prototypes and scale-up parts, demonstrating manufacturing equipment methods and conducting shop trials to ensure a robust process and supply chain. Evaluates risk of the concept material systems using appropriate tools (such as cost model analysis, risk charts, project management) to identify and mitigate program risk. Interfaces with internal customers and may interface with external customers. Will be expected to develop quickly so as to work under minimal supervision.
