Pharmacist Need-to-Know
Why be a Pharmacist in the U.S.?
- There are currently 240,000 pharmacist jobs with expected new job growth of 65,000 by the year 2016.
- The top retail pharmacy chains are financially strong and offer stable, long-term employment.
- Representing 50 percent of all U.S. retail pharmacists, the top pharmacy chains will need 30,000 new pharmacists.
- The U.S. educated supply of new pharmacist graduates is projected to fall short by over 1,200 pharmacists per year.
- Highly educated and compensated, the average wage for pharmacists is $106,000.
Pharmacist Resources
Foreign pharmacy graduates and foreign-educated scientists who wish to practice pharmacy in the
United States must become U.S. certified by following procedures established by the
National Associations of the Boards of Pharmacy (NABP).
Once certification is complete, a state-specific internship, national pharmacist licensure examination and
state-specific or multi-state jurisprudence examination are required before you can attain your pharmacist’s license
and become eligible to work in a particular state.
At CTS, we provide extensive support in the areas of certification and licensure to our pharmacy candidates.
External Resources:
Certification Process

|
| Step 1: FPGEC Certification | |
|
To begin the certification process, apply to the NABP for a Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Examination Committee (FPGEC) Certification.
The NABP’s Application Bulletin
describes all the detailed requirements and timing for processing information to the FPGEC.

Request an evaluation report from the
Educational Credential Evaluators (ECE).
Please follow all instructions with attention to ensuring that required documents come from the issuing
bodies only. Any incorrect or questionable documents will slow or stop the certification process.

Apply to the NABP to take the Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Equivalency Examination (FPGEE).
Upon approval from the NABP, you will receive an Authorization to Test (ATT) and an FPGEE
Identification Card. Please be sure to retain this information.
The FPGEE is offered at over two hundred Pearson Vue locations in
the U.S. only. This is a computer-based exam and is offered only twice a year,
in April and October. The NABP will provide the exact testing dates, and travel to the U.S. is a
requirement to take the exam. The NABP provides a pre-test and study guide suggestions on their website.
Our in-house Immigration team will assist our pharmacy candidates with
the temporary visas and travel arrangements needed for this step.

Each Foreign Pharmacy Graduate must also take and pass the Test of English as a Foreign
Language (TOEFL) and the Test of Spoken English (TSE) or take the TOEFL Internet-Based Test
(TOEFL iBT). You must attain passing scores in each of the four sections reported on one
official score report as a result of one testing session.
Please request that TOEFL/TSE Services submit an official report of your passing scores
directly to the FPGEC using institutional code 9103.
Once all testing requirements and educational certification have been met, within 3-4 weeks,
your FPGEC Certificate will be mailed.

| Local State Internship | |

| Local State Internship | |
|
Each U.S. state requires an internship to provide and improve your experience and knowledge
of working in a U.S. community pharmacy, though each state has different internship requirements. Your internship or professional experience as a
pharmacist outside of the U.S., prior to FPGEC Certification, will not necessarily
be credited toward a state's internship requirement. To find out more about crediting
previous experience toward your internship requirement, or to begin your internship,
contact the local State Board of Pharmacy in the state you want to work. Each state has different internship requirements.
From the NABP site, follow the ‘Boards of Pharmacy’ and ‘United States’ links in the left-hand navigation bar to view a list of all State Boards of Pharmacy.

|
| U.S. Local State Jurisprudence Licensing | |
|
After successful completion of your internship, you will be eligible to apply and take the North American Pharmacist
Licensure Examination (NAPLEX) and the Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Examination (MPJE) to earn your pharmacy license
within that state. Please note that some states have their own jurisprudence exam.
Once you have completed and passed the NAPLEX and MPJE, you have earned your State Pharmacy
License and are eligible to work in that state.
